I'll try to answer this one.
The old forum was created a long time ago, and is just hosted on some free forum site. We have very little control over it, and we aren't really able to 'integrate' it into our site. We wanted to do greater things with the forum and the site, and the free forum did not allow that. We are now moving to our own forum that we created, so we will have complete control over how it works.
The first improvement you will see is that in the Talk Trash forums, you will now be able to see the team and player number of each user.
We are also trying to add some improvements to our website that will use the login of a player. With the new forum, we will be able to use the same login information for the forum and the site. This way players won't have to register twice, or remember two sets of login info.
As to your question about why the captain needs to input the information: If the player was the one who was adding themselves to a team, they could pose as a player on a different team, which we kinda didn't want. The captains need to get and upload each of their players jersey numbers and sizes anyway, so it should be very easy to get email addresses at the same time.
If someone does have an issue and wants to register for the forums, and their captain hasn't uploaded their information, that player can contact
nfflwebmaster@gmail.com (quickest response), or
nebflagfootball@gmail.com, and we will set it so you will be able to register.
I agree that it might take some time to get used to the changes, but after that, the improvements that we will be able to make will be worth it.
